↑ «The Labyrinth, nº 5, volume II, January 1, 1845, p.↑ «Eugenio de Ochoa,“ Exhibition of works of Fine Arts in the Academy of San Fernando ”, Warehouse of literary fruits: Weekly of Palma, Volume 4, Number 51, November 14, 1844, p.^ "Fernando Alcolea - Emilia Carmena Monaldi".^ A b "Carmena Monaldi, Emilia - Collection - Museo Nacional del Prado".This painting was wrongly attributed, due to the poor legibility of the signature, until it was identified by the researcher Concha Díaz Pascual as a work by Carmena. The Prado also preserves a portrait made by Carmena of the military man and politician Juan Antonio Martínez de Alcobendas. Among the works by Carmena conserved in the National Heritage there are several copies of works from the Prado Museum, in whose records he frequently appears as a copyist. Several works by Carmena are currently conserved in the National Heritage collections, among them a post-mortem portrait of the Infante Luis made the same year as his appointment as a chamber painter, and a copy of " La Gioconda (Leonardo's workshop da Vinci) ". Unfortunately, most of these works were destroyed or disappeared after the Spanish Civil War. Impressed by the looting that the monastery had suffered at the hands of French troops during the Spanish War of Independence, Carmena made a total of 52 paintings over several decades in an attempt to resolve the loss of heritage artistic institution. Carmena came into contact with this institution in 1853 due to its connection with the Casa de Alba and soon became its benefactor. In his later career, the work carried out for the monastery of the Immaculate Conception (Loeches) stands out. Īlso in these news, Carmena was already listed as a drawing and painting teacher of the infantas María Cristina and Amalia, a position of which there is also testimony in the archive of the Prado Museum, an institution from which she requested the loan of works to be copied as an exercise training for infantas. As a result of this marriage, an only daughter was born, the composer María Isabel Prota Carmena. In these news items, the artist was already mentioned by her married name, Emilia Carmena de Prota, the name with which she signed her works from her marriage to Alejandro Prota y Boasi, attorney of Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart and Ventimiglia, XV Duke of Alba. In April 1850 was named painter of camera of Queen Elizabeth II, news that collected several newspapers, including The Observer, The Spain or La Nacion. In 1848 he participated in an exhibition held at the Madrid Artistic and Literary Lyceum, one of the most important Spanish artistic institutions of the 19th century. Sitting in those rocks and with the palette in hand, we saw more than once our appreciable compatriot Miss Emilia Carmena, to whose kindness we owe the power to illustrate these articles with some of the many drawings that, after her trip to the Basque provinces today enrich the study of such a distinguished young woman.
